Do you know a common mistake while preparing your favorite foods might lead you to cancer. Yes! You heard me RIGHT!

According to a latest study carried by Food Standards Agency-FSA; it was found out that cooking potatoes, breads, and other starchy varieties of food at high temperatures could cause them to produce a chemical that is CANCERIC, AND DANGEROUS! Yes, this carcinogen is called “Acrylamide,” and it is produced at a 248 Fahrenheit temperature or above. So, the FSA advises us to cook potatoes, chips, and toasts until they are light brown in color. As the darker or crunchier chips, potatoes, and toasts will definitely have greater amount of acrylamide present in them.

So, if this hasn’t raised your ears!!!!! Then read forward!

What exactly is acrylamide? And what are it’s SOURCES, and USES?

Acrylamide is an artificial chemical that is produced widely in the manufacture of fabrics, and adhesive glues, and as a water treatment agent. It’s also presents naturally in form of protein, and sugar in some foods, and is also a consequent of high temperature cooking. (as we have read above)

Moreover, shockingly, they are also present in your favorite dry fruits. As termed by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. Tests proved acrylamide was more generously present in dried prunes, and pears. (So, watch out especially against them.)

Now that we know about the latest research, and uses, and sources of acrylamide. Let’s read about the how dietary acrylamide leads to the Alzheimer’s Disease?????

Well, scientists are well aware about the havoc it causes to human’s central nervous system, leading to muscle weakness, and in coordination between various muscles. Acrylamide can also cause nerve cell damage in the brain!!!!

According to a neurotoxicologist, Richard LoPachin; acrylamide is similar in structure to acrolein, a chemical which is in increased amount, present in the Alzheimer’s disease, and other neurodegenerative disease patients. (So, watch out!!!!)

Apart from neurodegenerative disease, impaired nervous system, and other cancers. Acrylamide is also associated with breast cancer in women!


WELL….Based on my research, and understanding. I will guide you to follow these steps to minimize your intake of acrylamide. So, here goes:

1. Special Pre-Cooking/Baking/Toasting Methods for CARBS!

If you are preparing potatoes presoak them for 30 minutes. It will reduce acrylamide for about 40%. Never store your potatoes in fridge. Keep them in cool dry place as it increases in acrylamide levels. About the bread? If you bake your own bread then use rosemary in your dough preparation, it stashes out acrylamide to upto 60%. Also if you are use commercial bread, just cut off it’s corners or crust, where acrylamide is deposited tremendously, and toast your toasts till light brown in color.
2. New Cooking Method for CARBS!

Roast your potatoes to golden yellow rather than crunchy brown. Better cooking method is boiling, or steaming. Because water keep the temperature from going above 248, and thus will have ZERO ACRYLAMIDE PRODUCTION IN YOUR FOOD! I recommend you to cook on low flame for longer length of time to be safe from carcinogen acrylamide!!!!
3. Top-Up Your Diet with Anti-Cancer Foods

Research doesn’t have any food known to break the health hazards of acrylamide in your body. However, topping up with anti-cancer foods can help tremendously. I recommend you to eat more cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower. These foods not only detoxifies the cancer producing chemicals, but also curtail the growth of existing cancer cells. So, top-up more frequently.

Vitamin D: The quintessential vitamin to maintain your health

Vitamin DLet’s start with the question, why do kids need vitamin D (the sunlight vitamin)?

Well, they need vitamin D for growth and development of their bones. Even babies need it while in their mother’s womb. It’s that important. Plus it also helps in calcium absorption. Serious vitamin D deficiency can cause rickets, hypoglycemia, delayed motor development, pain, ache, muscle weakness, and fracture.

Did you know 80 percent of vitamin D is formed by our skin, when it comes in contact with sunlight? But due to changing times, kids are either not exposed that much to outdoor activities or are wearing too much clothes or get dark complexion etc. Basically they are not absorbing much sunlight. (Hence most of them are deficient).

But this latest research about vitamin D will most likely blow your mind.

According to a research carried out in Toronto on pre-schoolers (one to five years of ages), published in PLOS ONE, there was a significant link between vitamin D levels, and non-HDL cholesterol (Non-HDL cholesterol is a cardiovascular health marker).

Dr. Jonathan Maguire, the study author, a pediatrician at St. Michael’s concluded that higher the vitamin D level in the kids, the lower will be Non HDL cholesterol, thus less chances of getting cardiovascular disease in the adulthood of that child.

Based on these findings I recommend you to follow my below given guidelines to raise the vitamin D level in your toddlers. Since heart disease can easily be averted, and you as a parent might doubly be in need to introduce these dietary changes if heart disease runs in your family.

Plus, according to the studies published in “the American Academy of Pediatric” in adults, vitamin D is associated with prevention of autoimmune disease, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and on the whole, it boosts-up your immune system.

So, limited children studies, and extensive adult studies support the preventive role of vitamin D. You may wonder why wait?! Good!

But first, I advise you to get the vitamin D levels checked of your child. Being a functional medicine expert, holistic nutrition therapist, and integrative nutrition health coach. I know, it’s very important to know the numbers!

If they are below the normal limits then try these dietary changes. Otherwise, it can lead to constipation, fatigue, irritability, muscle weakness, dehydration, kidney stones, and hypercalcaemia. The children under 5 should have vitamin D between 1,500 to 3,000 IU (I have doubled these due to various health benefits but you need to confirm your child dosage according to his/her age to avoid vitamin D in toxicity that you will know after screening of the vitamin D results).

Now, let’s discuss about ways to increase vitamin D levels in your kid’s diet. That’s very easy then you think. All you need to do is to try to give them more eggs, oily fishes like salmon, tuna, mackerel, herring, and sardines, mushroom, and fortified cow milk products with vitamin D added.

You might say that it is not that easy to give them such foods as it is not their favorite choices. Then don’t fret. I will also guide you to introduce vitamin D fortified foods for your picky eaters.

So, here goes:

  • Give them fortified milk with cereals or weetabix in breakfast.
  • Use fortified milk as your soup or broth- base instead of water. Make them creamy, and rich.
  • Give them fortified flavored yogurt cooled in popsicles moulds instead of ice-cream or ice-lolly.
  • Give them smoothies made out of fortified milk or yogurts, and fruits.
  • Make their deserts from fortified milk like pudding or custards.
  • Give them fun-shaped sandwiches filled with cheese and eggs plus salad.
  • Even some cereals and cereal bars are fortified. Read the labels wisely. So, look out!
  • Give them fortified orange juice. Do label reading to find the suitable brand.

These are simple and fun ways to present nutrient rich diet to your toddlers. However, supplementation of cod liver oil is another way to ensure that your kid is getting his daily quota of vitamin D.

CataractCataracts is common amongst aging people. But my single recommendation can reverse the scenario.

Kiran’s Functional Medicine Anxiety Approach

AnxietyBeing a functional medicine expert, and integrative nutrition health coach. I get many clients in my online practice. Who are fed-up with anxiety disorder, and are taking psychiatric medications to improve their symptoms. The problem in this situation is that anxiety is not Xanax-deficiency disorder rather it’s more based on physiological conditions. It should be treated with viewing all mind, body, and spirit technicalities. Because people who take Xanax or other anxiety-reducing drugs might agree that it doesn’t help that much. So, the solution in better management of anxiety depends on changing life-style, and dietary habits. I will tell you how you can achieve that in my following lines written in this blog. So here goes:

Kiran’s Recommendations for Anxiety Management are:

  1. Keep Your Blood Sugar Level Maintained.
  • Present standard diet, just keeps you on a blood sugar roller coaster. Simple drop in sugar causes anxiety to crop-up.
  • So how anxiety crops up? Simple, when there is a crash in blood sugar, your body responds with stress. And stress hormones like adrenaline, and cortisol are secreted. In response the liver produces more blood sugar, so we can stay alive. Yes, we stay alive by this but on a heavy consequence. This hormonal stress response produced due to hypoglycemia, is very identical to the feeling of anxiety. Just by maintaining the blood sugar levels you can say good bye to anxiety for good.

So, how you can maintain it??


  • Eat more protein and healthy fats (e.g., olive oil, coconut oil, butter and ghee from pasture-raised animals).
  • Cut refined carbs, and sugar.
  • Eat more good fats (like coconut oil, olive oil, ghee, and butter), and protein (organic, and free-range produce).
  • Eat 5 times daily; 3 meals, and 2 snacks.
  • Take 1 tbsp. coconut oil, in the morning, after, and before bedtime. It will keep your sugar level balanced.
  • Keep ready snack always |(like dark chocolate, hard-boiled egg, nut, and nut butter).

2. Do Caffeine-Detox

  • Anxiety and caffeine have bad relationship status together. It acts as stressor to your nervous system, the result is anxiety.
  • If you are anxious throughout the day, then do caffeine detox.
  • Yes. The idea of leaving caffeine might cause anxiety right now. But the gradual decrease, and the final elimination will not only improve the management of anxiety alone but will also help to increase energy levels, improve sleep quality, and will make you more tolerant to stress factors. So, from coffee to green tea to herbal teas. And you are home.
  • And if you really want some kind of caffeine then green tea, in limits, is the okay caffeine.

3.Improve Sleep Quality.

  • Sound sleep is the best, natural savior against anxiety. Lack of sleep makes us more vulnerable to anxiety.

So what you can do is:

  • Even if you sleep well, but caffeine intake can reduce the quality of sleep.
  • Sleep in a dark room. Wear eye mask or get blackout curtains to achieve this. Keep the house clean, and unplug the electronics before going to sleep.
  • Cut or eliminate intake of caffeine

4. Improve Gut Health.

  • Research has proven the relationship between our moods, and gut health.
  • The friendly bacteria in our gut play a vital role in anxiety problems.

Kiran’s tips to help achieve healthy gut are:

  • Remove the allergens:
  • Diet: sugar, gluten, artificial sweeteners, industrial vegetable oils, and alcohol. (find your allergen, contact me to help you)
  • Some medications: oral contraceptives, antibiotics, and antacids. (Self-medication is bad avoid it. There are always natural methods to deal with problem).
  • Eat more fermented foods (like miso paste, sauerkraut, apple cider vinegar, etc) find your favorite.
  • Eat starchy tubers (like white, and sweet potatoes, plantain etc.).
  • Drink home-made bone broth, more.
  • Supplements: Take a probiotic, glutamine and collagen supplementation (halal certified ones).
  • Also squatty potty helps, along with meditation, yoga, acupuncture, going out in nature, and last but not the least good sleep in achieving good gut health. 5. Exercise

  • Physical activity is best anti- anxiety medicine. Do mini workouts in living room or you can go out and walk regularly. Generally, stand more, and sit less. Plus, Tai Qi, and yoga are very good for anxiety but find your favorite exercise routine. I personally, like long walks better.

6. Magnesium

  • Magnesium is a natural Xanax. Since most of our diet is deficient in magnesium owing to depleted soil. You can always supplement magnesium in a following ways:
  • Either take an Epsom bath;
  • Or apply topical magnesium gel;
  • Or take chelated magnesium supplement (like magnesium glycinate).

Anxiety has a great impact on your overall well-being. But blood sugar maintenance, reduction in caffeine intake, proper sleep, good gut health, regular exercise, and intake of magnesium helps a great deal in anxiety management. Why Fever-Lowering Drugs Are Bad For Your Child!

feverUsually parents call the doctor, when their children get fever, especially in case of infant younger 3 months, as it can lead into serious bacterial infections, if left untreated. Also, a child who has a seizure with fever should be checked by a physician, at least the first time.

However, fever is actually a signal that an immune system is miss-functioning and in older kids if they do not feel distress while in fever is a great thing. It is evidence that the child has an active immune system. Fever does not harm your brain or your body, although it does increase your need for fluids.

According to the New York Times, parents are not only the people who become profusely concerned.

According to some studies, medical professionals like doctors and nurses are more phobic towards fever as parent.

If the child gets up in the mid- night, with fever. Most parents react with, an immediate call to the physician, for reducing a fever, they might use, fever medicine (antipyretic) right away.

But is your child’s fever really a cause for concern, and is lowering it the best choice?

In most cases, a simple fever is actually a sign that your child’s immune system is working at its best. Virtually all animals naturally develop a fever when they’re fighting a bacterial or viral illness, and this response occurs because it improves your body’s ability to get rid of the bug.

Which in most cases, lowering a fever is unnecessary, it can stop the  recovery process of your child, thus prolonging rather than curing the illness more promptly.

Note that fever is not something to be scared off.  Research has shown that the higher the fever the stronger it acts as a catalyst effect to nurture stronger immune system.  Just like in weight training the heavier weights promote more muscles to form.

Fever-Reducing Drugs Are Not Permoted By The American Academy of Pediatrics

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recognizes that fever is not a disease, but a sign that your body is doing what it’s supposed to do to fight infection.

They state:

“Fever is not an illness, rather, it is a symptom of sickness and is usually a positive sign that the body is fighting infection.”

The American Academy of Pediatrics, does not even recommend treating your children with fever-lowering drugs—antipyretics, even if they have high fever.

As their Web site states:

 “Fever shouldn’t be treated by medicine if your child has no history of febrile convulsions nor uncomfortable feeling. The fever may be important in helping your child fight the infection.

Even higher temperatures are not in themselves dangerous or significant unless your child has a history of seizures or a chronic disease. Even if your child has a history of a fever-related convulsion and you treat the fever with medication, they may still have this kind of seizure … If he is playful, and is sleeping and eating well, he probably doesn’t require any medications.”

Advantages of Fever

When an organism invades your body, it triggers the release of pyrogen, a substance that signals your brain’s hypothalamus to raise your body’s temperature. This is done through a number of different mechanisms, including:

  • Raising the small hairs- piloerection, which suppresses sweating which is a cooling mechanism)
  • Restricting blood flow to the skin to minimize heat loss
  • Increasing your metabolic rate
  • Release of the hormone TRH
  • Shivering

Fever actually acts as a launching pad for many beneficial bodily processes both directly or indirectly, which help the body against invasion of virus or bacteria. Some of these benefits include:

  • More interferon, a natural antiviral and anticancer substance, is produced, which helps block the spread of viruses to healthy cells
  • Fever also impairs the replication of many bacteria and viruses
  • Improved ability of certain white blood cells to destroy bacteria and infected cells
  • Microbes are directly killed by high temperature (most viruses and bacteria actually grow better at temperature lower than the human body)
  • Walling off of iron, which bacteria feed on
  • More white blood cells are produced to help fight off the invading bugs
  • Increase in antibodies — cells trained to specifically attack the exact type of invader that your body is suffering from

It is rare for a fever to rise higher than 104 or 105 degrees F, and as long as your child does not seem distressed, there is no harm in letting a fever run its course. Keep in mind also that fevers tend to spike in the late afternoon and evening, so a slight increase in fever during this time is not necessarily cause for alarm.

Reasons Why Fever-Lowering Drugs Are Unnecessary, and Even Dangerous

As mentioned earlier, in most cases you should avoid giving your child medications to lower fever, as these medications will typically only suppress the natural healing mechanisms of the fever and prolong the illness.

In fact, the article Fever in Children — A Blessing in Disguise, originally printed in Mothering Magazine and definitely worth reading if you have young children at home, points many researches showing that fever-lowering might actually prolong the illness:

  • Another study found that a host of pain relievers, including aspirin and ibuprofen, inhibited white-cell production of antibodies by up to 50 percent.
  • In test-tube studies, therapeutic levels of aspirin suppressed the ability of human white blood cells to destroy bacteria.
  • In a research carried on children with chicken pox, showed that treating them with acetaminophen increased itching and scabbing-time in comparison to placebo-treatment.
  • A study of adults with colds found that aspirin and acetaminophen suppressed production of antibodies and increased cold symptoms, with a trend toward longer infectiousness.

Fever-lowering medicines like aspirin cause Reye’s syndrome in some (it’s recommended that children under 19 under fever should not take aspirin due to its link with Reye’s syndrome), Ibuprofen is linked with stomach upset and acetaminophen is linked with liver damage.

Note,  that the purpose of the fever is to provoke the immune system and create an unfriendly environment for invading organisms, basically to increase the temperature of the body, so that microbes couldn’t live in it anymore. So if you are using fever-reducing drugs you are supporting the multiplication of invading pathogens.

Plus, medication could also mask your symptoms and put you back in doing normal activities, too soon, whereas your body needed some more rest.

When is a Fever Dangerous?

In most cases, rest and plenty of fluids is all that’s needed when a fever strikes. Fever does increase fluid loss, so it’s important to give your child plenty of fluids, even if they don’t feel thirsty, to prevent dehydration. There are some instances, however, when a fever does require medical attention.

This includes:

  • Fever in an infant younger than 3 months (at any temperature)
  • Fever above 102.2 degrees F in children between 3 months and 36 months, if they appear ill
  • Anytime a fever rises over 104.5 degrees F

In children 5 years and under, fever can also lead to a seizure, known as a febrile seizure. Though this can be frightening, it typically will cause no lasting effects. During a febrile seizure, lay your child on his side or stomach on the ground, loosen any tight clothing and support the child to prevent injury. When the seizure stops, you should seek medical attention right away to be sure the seizure was not caused by something other than the fever, such as meningitis or bacteria in the blood.

Finally, remember that letting a fever run its course is typically the best choice to help your child fight off a viral or bacterial infection … but I recommend you to bolster your child’s immune system by using tools like balanced diet, exercise, stress relief and sound sleep, so that pathogens could be killed without needing the aid of fever.

Morning Rituals for Optimal Health


So, like many of us, your morning routine may include washing-up your face, brushing teeth, taming wild hair; oil-pulling if oral-health conscious?! What, I want you to do as your health coach; after you crawl out of your bed and do the above mentioned rituals, is to, add-up the following simple things into your before you get ready to face the world-routine.


Now that you have done your regular hygiene stuff; it’s time for you to monitor and check your body, for subtle imbalances. Okay, by doing the following steps; you will get an insight into what’s going on inside of your body. Plus, these few minutes added, to your morning-routine, will be hugely beneficial for your quest for optimal health.

1.       Monitor the color of your tongue.

Okay, before you move away from the mirror, check out the color of your tongue. Whether it’s light pink or dark red? The shade of the tongue is a superb marker for the amount of inflammation present in your body. So, you may ask, what to notice? If it’s dark red, it’s means your body is highly inflamed. Ideally, it should be lighter shade of pink. So, you notice dark red, it’s high time to start anti-inflammatory diet

2.       Now, check your eyes.

It’s time to look into your eyes and see, whether the whites of your eyes are bloodshot, yellowish or white and clear? If they are bloodshot, you should be worried about inflammation, stress or fatigue; if they are yellow; I suggest you go for a detox as it points towards toxins and chemicals build-up.  While white and clear are the ones you should be targeting for.

3.       Check the feel and taste of your mouth.

If you have a white gunk build-up, in or around the corners or a unusually strong breath,  this may be a red flag that something is out of whack.  You may be struggling with food sensitivity or a buildup of toxins in the body. Otherwise, slightly sour morning mouth is fairly normal.

4. Examine your poop.

Most people prefer to flush before they check out what’s in the toilet bowl. But wait! Your bowel movements are an excellent way to gain some insight into how things are going inside your body. It’s best; you have one to three normal bowel movements per day. Here’s a detailed Info-graphic to help you out!


5. Observe your skin.

As you’re washing your face and moisturizing your body, observe your skin and watch for any changes or irritation. If you notice anything unusual you may be able to identify or prevent more serious internal health issues.

6.  Test your pH.

If you have an extra moment in the morning, get out your litmus paper and to test your pH. Use either saliva or urine (the second pee of the day will give you a more accurate reading).  You should look for neutral pH, ideally. As overly alkaline or overly acidic body can cause a variety of physical ailments. Normally, the standard Pakistani diet, focuses on acidifying foods like sugar, dairy, grains and proteins. If you get an acidic pH reading, I suggest you to eat more alkaline-based foods like veggies and dark leafy greens.
