Vitamin D a Must for Elderly for Better Cognitive Health!!!!!

According to a recent study published in JAMA Neurology, study authors have concluded that there is a definite link between deficiency of vitamin D, and low cognition. Specially seen in patients with dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease.

So, it gets imperative for the us, to identify the vitamin D insufficiency in elderly,  as deficiency of vitamin D accelerates decline in executive function performance, and memory.

In this study about 400 males and females participated at the Alzheimer’s disease Center in Sacramento, Calif. Generally, 76 years of age participants with normal cognition or mild cognitive impairment, and dementia were studied.

All the participants were initially subjected to vitamin D measurement test. Amazingly, all of them reported vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency. About thirty-five percent were insufficient, and twenty-six percent were found deficient.

After 5 years, in a follow-up session it was seen that the vitamin D deficient people had cognitive decline at a rate of 2 to 3 times more faster. The author of study were prepared for cognition decline in vitamin D deficient subjects but were not exactly aware about the huge impact deficiency of vitamin D has on cognition.

The above mentioned evidence is enough to have your health-care providers prescribe you vitamin D supplementation if you are elderly, particularly.

Lack of vitamin D is linked with many disease. But , it is very easy to rectify it. I will recommend you all to take proper sun exposure. Apart from sunlight, you need to take dietary means, and supplementations.

As some ethnic and racial groups are more prone to be vitamin D deficient due to more concentration of melanin on darker skin that inhibits vitamin D production. While others cover themselves generously due to overexposure that inhibits them to make vitamin D for themselves. Plus, mostly we spent more time indoors in fluorescent lights, and away from sunlight. And due to other climatically and geographical dispositions. Gear-up your diet, supplement, and spend more time in natural light.

Stay Healthy!
